March 7th, our (Summer Sizzle Up-and-coming designers) mentor (and founder of Trefle Designs) decided to take us to St. Thomas to do some fabric ‘shopping’. The Monday was a local BVI public holiday and so we decided to take the day collecting swatches for our collection.
Our first stop was at The Fabric Store right in the Down town area. It was a far walk (I must say) and by the time we reached most of us were pretty tires. However, it being the largest fabric store that I’ve ever peronaly been to, it was a world unlike any other. Most of us found at least one fabric that we absolutely loved in that store, so basically that store was the pinnacle of all our fabric desires.
We went to two other stores (I honestly can’t remember the names of either), both which had a very limited selection of fabrics. The last wasn’t all that bad as it was sort of like a treasure hunt in there. You practically had to search for material. But in doing so we were met with all sorts of hidden discoveries. It was a wonderful experience.
The learning experience that came from this trip was one to remember. It was evident (for all of us) that designing was a tedious task and sometimes adjustments has to be made when it comes to getting a collection on the runway.
A lot of adjustments were made. Especially in the area where fabric selection was concerned. Later in the month, we got to meet with the founder of Summer Sizzle BVI who confirmed this.
I am very greatful to be a part of the Summer Sizzle experience.
